1. Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunities at Rhodes College

Rhodes is a small (1675 undergraduates) liberal arts and sciences college located in the urban location of Memphis, Tennessee in the southern part of the USA. The average financial aid package received by international students at Rhodes last year was just under US $20,000. International students are eligible for scholarships at Rhodes valued at US $5,000 to $32,000 per year.

There is no separate application process for these scholarships; students must simply submit the application and supporting documents for admission to be considered.  Scholarship amounts are based on academic merit, standardized test scores, extracurricular accomplishments and letters of recommendation.

There are two additional fellowships for which international students may apply:  The Taylor Fellowship for Physics, valued at up to US $15,000 per year, is designed for students who are passionate about physics (www.rhodes.edu/finaid/1413.asp)  and the Bonner Service Scholarship, valued at US $12,500 per year, is designed for servant leaders and students excited about community service (www.rhodes.edu/finaid/611.asp).

Please see www.rhodes.edu/internationaladmissions or email Lauren Sefton at SEFTONL@rhodes.edu for more information about the admission process and scholarships at Rhodes College.

7. SUNY Plattsburgh - Update and Scholarship Information for International Students

Again, SUNY Plattsburgh has been named among the top schools in the 2009 edition of "America's Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report, as well as one of the "100 best values" among public universities in the United States by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine.  I am very proud that we received special recognition in U.S. News & World Report for our large and diverse international student enrollment.  As a matter of fact, we enroll approximately 400 international undergraduates (more than 7% of our total undergraduate population) from 60 countries.

International undergraduate applicants now have two options to apply for admission - the Common Application and the SUNY Plattsburgh International Undergraduate Application.  Links to both of these applications are available on our website:

Common Application - https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/default.aspx

SUNY Plattsburgh International Undergraduate Application - http://www.plattsburgh.edu/admissions/international/apply.php

This summer, we began construction on a new, earth-friendly addition to Hudson Hall.  Housing the Center for Earth and Environmental Science and chemistry and physics programs, Hudson Hall is one of the two main science buildings on campus.  The new addition is slated for completion in 2012.

Furthermore, President Obama has named SUNY Plattsburgh Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Nancy Elwess a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

For your students wanting to find out more about SUNY Plattsburgh through videos or social networking (okay ... maybe I'm getting too old for this job), here are links to our YouTube channel and Facebook

We use rolling admission so there is no specific application deadline, but we encourage completed applications by no later than April 1 for September entry and November 1 for January entry.  We begin reviewing applications for fall enrollment in November.  For the fall 2009 semester, we were "full" before May 15.

10. Summer Graduate Research Fellowship Program from the Institute for Humane Studies

The application for the Summer Graduate Research Fellowship Program is now available! The fellowship provides funding and a supportive group format so you can spend next summer working on a thesis chapter or publishable paper germane to the classical liberal tradition.

The program includes a $3,000 stipend, two interdisciplinary seminars to discuss your research, and guidance from the program director. To attend the seminars, you'll receive a travel allowance and local housing.

The program begins in June with a short conference at the Institute for Humane Studies in Arlington, VA, where you will present the broad context of your work to about 10 other fellows and a faculty advisor. During the program, you'll work on your research and participate in online discussions of classical liberal texts. In August, all fellows return to IHS to present their research.

Past participants in the program have made valuable progress on both their research and their understanding of classical liberal themes. The fellowship includes advanced graduate and law students with a wide range of intellectual interests, and this interdisciplinary focus is one of the most appreciated features of our program. Past participants have been students of philosophy, history, economics, political science, public policy, social thought, literature, and law.
